Mediation gives you and your spouse an opportunity to negotiate a divorce settlement in a structured setting through a trained facilitator. The mediation process fosters cooperation between partners and removes the unpredictability and uncertainty associated with litigation. Mediation often reduces the time and costs of divorce, and puts the decisions in your hands. Attorney Peterson can advise you throughout the process, make recommendations, and review the proposed settlement on your behalf within the bounds of the rules set down by the mediator you and your spouse may select. Attorney Peterson also offers services as a mediator himself. Details are available on his mediation practice page.
Limited Assistance Representation Qualified Attorney
Massachusetts court rules now permit the “unbundling” of legal services in the Probate Court as well as other courts. What this means in the divorce context is that instead of paying a large retainer and incurring sizeable legal fees to have the lawyer handle all aspects of the case from start to finish, you may retain the lawyer merely as an advisor, or to prepare the complaint or other pleadings or motions, agreements and other documents, or to appear in court for limited purposes only (such as for a motion for temporary orders) which will permit the lawyer to file a limited purpose appearance and then withdraw from the case once the specific matter to be dealt with has been heard in court. Attorney Peterson is qualified under court rules to accept clients on a limited assistance basis.Knowledgeable family law litigator
